Male vs Female Dogs: Do Temperament Differences Matter

Sex predicts a small slice of a dog's temperament; genetics, rearing, and reproductive status predict a lot more of it.

Female dogs, on average, score higher on measures of obedience than males. Male dogs, on average, score slightly higher on aggression toward strangers and other dogs. Both of those are true, and neither one tells you much about the puppy sitting in front of you.

The checklist: what sex actually predicts, and what it doesn’t

  • Aggression — males trend marginally higher on average, but the effect is small next to breed, socialization window, and individual history.
  • Fearfulness — females trend slightly higher on fear-related responses in survey data; again, a small group-level shift, not a rule.
  • Trainability/obedience — females have shown higher average obedience scores in some questionnaire-based research, though sex is a weak predictor next to consistency of training.
  • Sociability and play style — some data point to females leaning more toward cooperative interaction with people, males toward physical play with other dogs.
  • Marking, mounting, roaming, heat-cycle behavior — these are hormone-driven and change most with spay/neuter status, not sex alone.
  • Core temperament — genetics, littermate environment, and early socialization outweigh sex as predictors of the adult dog you end up with.

None of those bullets is a coin flip you should make a placement decision on. Here’s why, one at a time.

What the data says about aggression and fear

A research overview on behavioral and perceptual sex differences in dogs, published via NCBI, lays out the pattern researchers keep finding: males and females diverge on a handful of measures — aggression, fear, sociability, focus on human cues — but the divergence is a shift in the average, not a wall between two populations. A working definition I use with clients: sex differences in dog behavior look like two overlapping bell curves, not two different shapes. Most of the male distribution and most of the female distribution sit in the same range.

That matters clinically. A referring owner will sometimes tell me they picked a female because “males are more aggressive,” and I have to walk that back gently. Group averages are real, but they’re built from thousands of dogs pooled together, including dogs with wildly different breeds, rearing, and reproductive status. A fearful female Malinois and a mellow male Golden Retriever both exist, and betting on sex alone to predict either one is a bad bet.

I’ve watched this play out with a case that still sticks with me: a 14-month-old female Belgian Malinois, 48 pounds, brought in by an owner who’d specifically chosen a female because she’d read that males were “more work.” Within three months the dog had resource-guarded a bully stick twice and was reactive on leash toward other dogs on the same suburban block, every walk, rain or shine. The owner sat across from me in the exam room, genuinely confused, because the sex-based prediction she’d been given hadn’t matched what she was living with. We built a management and desensitization plan around the individual dog in front of us — her arousal threshold, her specific triggers, her recovery time after an outburst — not around her chromosomes.

Trainability, sociability, and the obedience question

The trainability finding — females edging out males on average obedience scores in some questionnaire studies — gets repeated a lot, and it deserves a caveat every time. Obedience surveys mostly capture owner-reported behavior, which folds in owner expectations and handling style along with the dog’s actual learning rate. If you compare that against breed-specific work like a preliminary MDPI study using the C-BARQ questionnaire in Australian Shepherds, sex still shows up as one of the more consistent predictors within that single breed — females had lower odds of high-intensity attachment- and excitability-related responses than males in that sample. That’s a useful data point, but it’s one breed, one questionnaire, one study population. I would not build a training plan on it alone, and neither should you.

What I tell clients instead: pick your training method for the dog’s drive level and your household’s consistency, not for the dog’s sex. Where hormones stop and reproductive status starts

A lot of what people call “male behavior” or “female behavior” is actually reproductive-hormone behavior, and it changes with spay or neuter status more than it tracks sex on its own. Marking, mounting, roaming, and heat-cycle irritability are the classic examples — behaviors driven by circulating hormones that shift substantially once a dog is altered. The load and recovery angle: does sex change a working dog’s tolerance

On the sports-medicine side of this publication’s beat, I get asked whether sex changes how much training load a dog can absorb before you see fatigue, reactivity, or a drop-off in focus. In my experience the honest answer is: less than people expect, and less than breed or conditioning history does. A well-conditioned female sporting dog and a well-conditioned male of the same breed recover on comparable timelines when volume and rest are matched. Where I do see a real, individual difference is around heat cycles in intact females — training volume and recovery windows sometimes need adjusting during and after estrus, which is a conversation for your vet or a canine sports-medicine specialist, not a blanket rule for the sex as a whole.

One short truth worth sitting with: sex tells you almost nothing about how a specific dog will handle a hard week of work.

Where I land

I don’t pick a dog’s temperament off its sex, and I don’t recommend clients do it either. The group-level differences in the research — the small aggression bump in males, the small fear and obedience bump in females — are real enough to show up in large datasets, but they explain a sliver of the variation you’ll actually meet in an individual dog. Breed, early socialization, reproductive status, and the specific dog’s drive and recovery pattern do far more work than sex alone.
